In no small part thanks to the success of Pennsylvania’s foray into legalized gambling, Atlantic City, New Jersey, has for years been coasting on a downward trajectory, caught in a vicious cycle at whose root lies a fading casino industry.

Things are so bad, in fact, that efforts are underway by various factions in Trenton to effect a state takeover of the city.

Lawmakers, governor to resume talks Monday

Following several hours behind closed doors this afternoon, legislative leaders reported minimal progress on a budget agreement with the governor, who separately confirmed to reporters that he does plan to veto the stopgap measure, SB 1000, passed by the House earlier in the day.

House debates stopgap budget under cloud of veto threat

As expected today, the House followed the Senate’s work earlier in the week, approving stopgap budget legislation SB 1000 along a party-line vote of 117-83. The plan, referred to as an “emergency funding” measure by Republicans throughout the day’s debate, would effectively implement one-third of the budget passed by the General Assembly in June and subsequently vetoed by Gov. Tom Wolf. Today’s vote was taken, however, under the threat of veto by Gov. Wolf.

A new police task force in OH, greyhound racing under fire in WV, and tiny houses in NJ

In Ohio, Gov. John Kasich announced a new police task force following the shooting of a 12 year-old in Cleveland, in West Virginia the greyhound racing industry faces renewed threats from animal welfare groups and legislators, and in New Jersey a bill is under debate that would establish a pilot program for tiny houses.
