Keeping up with the neighbors: Neighboring states respond to Ebola threat

Last Friday morning Gov. Tom Corbett, Secretary of Health Mike Wolf and Physician General Dr. Carrie DeLone offered an update on Pennsylvania's Ebola preparedness, and emphasized there is no need to panic about a possible spread of the virus in the commonwealth. No cases have yet been reported within Pennsylvania borders but that hasn't stopped a frenzy of media reports and public concern over the possibility of the virus spreading.

What’s next for suspended Supreme Court Justice Seamus McCaffery?

On Monday, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court suspended Justice Seamus McCaffery after that court’s presiding officer, Chief Justice Ronald Castille, announced publicly that Justice McCaffery had traded in pornographic emails along with members of former Attorney General and current Governor Tom Corbett’s staff and others.

The Supreme Court referred the matter for expedited review by the Judicial Conduct Board, which was given 30 days to determine whether a formal complaint should be filed.

While proceedings of this kind are very rare, particularly in the highest appellate court in the state, it has happened before and there is a prescribed process to deal with it. The PLS Reporter has researched what could happen next in this case.

Efforts to kill municipal gun ordinance challenge bill fail

“It’ll kill the bill” was the motto of a number of members of the House Rules Committee Monday afternoon as several attempts to challenge or amend House Bill 80—which would have required additional Senate action and effective killing the bill—failed in committee.

Municipal gun ordinance challenge legislation has clear path in House

An amendment to House Bill 80 that would provide standing to membership organizations to challenge municipal gun ordinances when members are aggrieved by the ordinances garnered a lot of debate before it was adopted on the Senate floor Wednesday night.

The full bill, with amendment, passed the full Senate Thursday by a vote of 34-14.
