Following a nearly two hour Senate GOP caucus, The PLS Reporter caught up with Majority Leader Jake Corman (R-Centre) and he provided a preview of the Senate GOP’s spring agenda and what he hopes to see during a scheduled meeting with Gov. Tom Wolf on Tuesday.

Capitol Quick Hits for 4.13.15

Here are the highlights from news conferences, rallies, and advocacy days held in the Capitol today: 

  • Pharmacists and student pharmacists met in the Main Capitol Rotunda for Pennsylvania Pharmacy Day. They focused on the important role pharmacists play as medication experts and key legislative issues which include: the registration and transparency of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), fair pharmacy audits and expansion of pharmacist-provided immunization opportunities.
  • Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Advocates convened on the steps of the Main Rotunda to promote Pennsylvania Agenda for Women’s Health, a package of bills that cover issues such as pregnancy accommodations for working women, breastfeeding accommodations for nursing mothers, restoring patient trust in health care providers, and ending sexual harassment in the workplace.
  • Human rights advocates and former PA state representative Jeff Coleman held a discussion in the Main Rotunda for Life Action Day on the impact of abortion on Pennsylvania’s communities, and to launch the website “AbortionisPersonal.org." The site is a resource for Pennsylvanians committed to understanding the true impact of abortion on women, their families and their communities.
  • Pennsylvania Women Work volunteers held an event to raise awareness about the New Choices program, an online resource helping women statewide to look for job training to further their careers.
  • The Historical Preservation Society of Gettysburg-Adams County (HGAC) held a press conference in the Main Rotunda following a resolution vote on the House Floor to designate 2015 The Year of the Pennsylvania Barn.

Senate Democratic leaders discuss budget strategy, property tax relief with governor

Upon their leaving a meeting with Gov. Tom Wolf, The PLS Reporter caught up with two members of Senate Democratic leadership who discussed its contents and their views of the conversation.

“It was just a general meeting, that’s all,” said Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa (D-Allegheny). “We’re back after a long legislative break, through the budget hearings and now we’re sort of getting coordinated in learning what we learned over the last several weeks and how we move forward.”

Auditor General, legislators cast light on troubling PDE conduct

During Thursday’s meeting with the House Republican Policy Committee, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale told committee members he’s uncovered a number of troubling actions on the part of the Pennsylvania Department of Education while conducting his department’s yet-to-be-released audit.

“[There] is a culture in that agency that is not healthy for fostering good education outcomes,” he told the committee.

He said that his department’s audit will focus on, among other things, what PDE does to help school districts that are struggling academically, specifically on reporting.

“School districts are incredibly frustrated,” he added.
