Two shale gas friendly candidates face off in Washington county special house race

With the election four months away, both Democrats and Republicans already have candidates lined up for a Washington county special election in what could be a tough battle, as national attention focuses on southwestern Pennsylvania over the 18th Congressional special election.

Scheduled for May 15, the special election was scheduled after former 48th District representative Brandon Neuman resigned December 31 last year to take over as a Washington county judge.

With a little over 73 percent of the vote, Austin Davis won the 35th House District special election Tuesday night.

The district, which represents many old mill towns in the Monongahela River Valley in Allegheny County, was empty after former Democratic representative Marc Gergely resigned the seat after being convicted and sentenced for his role in an illegal gambling ring.
