Legislator hopes horse-trading can bring climate change issues to the fore

While acknowledging the current political climate makes putting issues like climate change front-and-center more difficult, Rep. Greg Vitali (D-Delaware), minority chairman of the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, announced Thursday he is introducing three pieces of legislation to reduce carbon emissions in Pennsylvania.

“It’s definitely going to be a tough issue given the composition of the legislature,” Rep. Vitali said Thursday. “The legislature is very conservative.”

Senate committee examines better ways to fund 911 services

The Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee Wednesday held a hearing to find better ways to fund E-911 services, an issue county governments have said is a main priority.

The issue has become a pressing one as the Emergency Telephone Act, which implemented a surcharge on wireless devices that goes to funding 911 call centers, is due to expire at the end of June.

Wolf’s Supreme Court nominees head for confirmation hearing

The Senate Rules and Executive Nominations Committee Wednesday acted upon two sets of nominees: Gov. Tom Wolf’s nominations to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and a last-minute gubernatorial nomination by former-Gov. Tom Corbett.

During Wednesday’s meeting, the nominations of Kenneth Gormley and Thomas Kistler to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court were unanimously sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee for confirmation hearings.

Bill regulating health insurance exchange navigators advances

The Senate Appropriations Committee Tuesday advanced legislation from Sen. John Eichelberger (R-Blair) that would place regulations on federal Affordable Care Act health insurance exchange navigators.

Couched by Sen. Eichelberger as a consumer protection measure, the bill—Senate Bill 293—would require the navigators undergo criminal background checks and be registered with the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.
