Public calls for the removal of controversial Stephen Foster statue in Pittsburgh

Public commenters at a Pittsburgh Art Commission hearing Wednesday overwhelmingly called for the removal of the controversial Stephen Foster statue from public property, calling it racist and demeaning to black culture.

The Commission scheduled a hearing to gather information and to hear from the public about the controversial statue that was built in 1900 depicting Stephen Foster, a Pittsburgh-born songwriter known for his work with minstrel music, standing over a barefoot black slave playing a banjo.

Proposed hotel tax increase could hurt chances of Pittsburgh's proposed Sports Commission

The latest effort by lawmakers in Harrisburg to balance this year’s state budget via a five percent hotel tax increase could hurt the chances of a long-sought after Pittsburgh Sports Commission, said Pittsburgh officials Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Sports Commission is part of an economic development strategy between VisitPittsburgh, the city’s official tourism promotion agency, the Sports Exhibition Authority, with support from the Peduto administration and City Council to recruit major sporting events to the city.

Pittsburgh asking local developers to propose sites for potential Amazon headquarters

In a competitive, nationwide bid to land Amazon’s proposed second headquarters, Pittsburgh and Allegheny County leaders are calling on area developers to submit their best sites.

Amazon HQ2 Team Pittsburgh has issued a Request for Expressions of Interest, seeking potential sites in the Greater Pittsburgh area to include in their formal response to Amazon’s request for proposals for a second headquarters.

Pittsburgh launches new multicultural unit to aide immigrant and refugee communities

The Peduto administration announced this week that it will be launching a new Multicultural Liaison Unit to help build relationships between the Department of Public Safety and the city’s immigrant and refugee population.  


The unit will translate police, fire, and medic materials into the five most common foreign languages in the city: Arabic, Chinese, Nepalese, Spanish and Swahili.
