Here are the highlights from news conferences, rallies, and advocacy days held in the Capitol today:

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) officially changed its name to the Department of Human Services (DHS) during a name change and logo unveiling ceremony today in Harrisburg. “Our new name better reflects the wide range of services we offer to Pennsylvanians as well as respect for our clients, their families and advocacy groups who have been requesting the name change,” said Secretary Bev Mackereth. Gov. Corbett signed Act 2014-132 on Sept. 24, causing the name change to happen Nov. 24, 2014.
  • House Speaker Sam Smith (R-Jefferson) was the featured speaker at today’s Press Club luncheon. Speaker Smith is retiring this year but is currently serving his 14th term in the Pennsylvania House as one of its most tenured members.
  • The Pennsylvania Medical Society held a conference call this morning to discuss how new Medicare rules, which go into effect on December 31, will impact specific broad aspects of patient care. Experts also discussed the impact of the sustainable growth rate (SGR) on consolidation of health care services.
