Reed random selection redistricting bill awaits committee assignment

Filed last week, a redistricting bill by House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana) has been much anticipated as lawmakers in the House and Senate try to find common ground among themselves and advocates.

A copy of the bill obtained by The PLS Reporter before introduction shows that his plan would hem close to the solution by random selection Reed first pitched in early May. As promised, it sets up a system that uses every registered voter as a base.

Redistricting won its first vote in the General Assembly Tuesday to the applause of advocates packing the room.

A compromise amendment forged by Senate State Government Committee Chair Mike Folmer (R-Lebanon) and redistricting advocates led by Fair Districts PA was added onto SB 22, then passed by all members in attendance.

A newly drafted amendment to redistricting advocates’ main bill attempts to strike a compromise between legislators and reformers’ wildest dreams.

The new language, written after a week of intensive negotiations between the advocates — including Common Cause PA and Fair Districts PA — and Senate State Government Chair Sen. Mike Folmer (R-Lebanon) would give legislators some say in choosing the commission.
