Gov. Wolf issues statewide disaster declaration for the opioid crisis

Gov. Tom Wolf announced Wednesday he is issuing a statewide disaster declaration for the opioid crisis.

 

The declaration puts into action a 90 day state constitutionally-limited period where additional state resources can be coordinated and regulations waived en masse in order to jump start an offense against the heroin and opioid epidemic.

The first round of bidding for Pennsylvania’s newest brand of casinos started Wednesday just prior to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board’s regular meeting and the winning bid went to Mountain View Thoroughbred Racing Association, a subsidiary of Penn National Gaming that operates Hollywood Casino in Grantville, Pennsylvania, just outside of Hershey.

In light of Commonwealth Court recommendations and mounting costs, Senate Republican leaders urge League of Women Voters to drop redistricting lawsuit

With Commonwealth Court Judge Kevin Brobson recommending to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court that the state’s congressional districts are constitutional, and legal costs in the ongoing redistricting lawsuit now reaching over $1 million, Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson) and Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman (R-Centre) issued a statement Tuesday urging the lead plaintiff’s in the case, the League of Women Voters, to drop the lawsuit to allow for real reform to take place.

Lawmaker floats proposal to lower state’s personal income tax rate

Hoping to boost the rate of Pennsylvania’s economic growth, Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington) recently floated a proposal to lower the commonwealth’s personal income tax (PIT) rate from 3.07 percent to 2.82 percent.

 

The proposal comes on the heels of recently enacted federal tax reform that sought to cut taxes for the majority of Americans and spur economic growth, but was also projected to grow the national deficit.
