Senate Democratic leaders discuss budget strategy, property tax relief with governor

Upon their leaving a meeting with Gov. Tom Wolf, The PLS Reporter caught up with two members of Senate Democratic leadership who discussed its contents and their views of the conversation.

“It was just a general meeting, that’s all,” said Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa (D-Allegheny). “We’re back after a long legislative break, through the budget hearings and now we’re sort of getting coordinated in learning what we learned over the last several weeks and how we move forward.”

Reed says property tax reform bill coming soon, provides budget update

House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana) held a late afternoon conference call with reporters to provide a budget update and give insight into the Spring/Summer legislative schedule of the House.

During the call, Rep. Reed told reporters that a bill to bring dollar-for-dollar reductions in school property taxes could be considered by the House in a matter of weeks.

Gov. Wolf nominates Timothy Reese for State Treasurer

Just over two months after former-State Treasurer Rob McCord announced his resignation amid a federal investigation, Gov. Tom Wolf Tuesday announced the nomination of Timothy Reese to take over the post.

“Tim is a proven leader with a diverse financial background – as a consultant, an entrepreneur and an investor," Gov. Wolf said in a statement. "His outstanding management experience and fiscal expertise, along with a passion for promoting financial literacy, will help bring stability to the Treasury and refocus the department on its core mission."

Legislation gives Commonwealth a greater role in promoting local government efficiencies

A bill introduced with bipartisan support that would give the Commonwealth a greater role in promoting local government efficiencies cleared the House Urban Affairs Committee Tuesday.

House Bill 11 has been introduced by Rep. Seth Grove (R-York) and Rep. Mike Schlossberg (D-Lehigh) and will allow the Commonwealth to instruct local governments on the use of lean management practices to find efficiencies and innovations similar to that currently being sought by Gov. Tom Wolf’s GO-TIME initiative.
