Metcalfe committee tirade prompts Democratic calls for chair resignation

After Rep. Daryl Metcalfe’s (R-Butler) outburst Tuesday over a touch on the arm from Rep. Matthew Bradford (D-Montgomery) that led to the former questioning the sexuality of the latter, Democrats are calling for Metcalfe to resign as majority chairman of the House State Government  Committee.

As the majority chair of that committee, Metcalfe controls whether any civil rights legislation could reach the House floor, including HB 1410, written by Rep. Dan Frankel (D-Allegheny), which would provide workplace discrimination protections for LGBT individuals to state law.

Senate Democratic Policy Committee hears testimony on bill allowing involuntary treatment of drug users

Senators on the Senate Democratic Policy Committee gathered in Pittsburgh Friday to discuss a bill that would allow family members to seek involuntary commitment of those suffering from the opioid crisis and drug users.

The bill, Senate Bill 391 sponsored by Sen. Jay Costa (D-Forest Hills), is currently going through a rewrite as the Senator has offered an amendment that would allow a spouse, relative or guardian—or anyone at the request of the spouse, relative or guardian—of a user to file a petition with the Single County Authority after a suicide attempt, overdose, shows an inability to make a rational decision, or has harmed or has attempted to harm others.
