Allegheny County Council considers banning conversion therapy on minors

In fifteen states and the District of Columbia, conversion therapy, the practice of removing homosexuality on the belief that it’s a mental illness, is banned. If Allegheny County Council President John DeFazio (D-Shaler) and County Councilman Paul Klein (D-Point Breeze) have their way, the county will join their ranks in the way of an ordinance banning its use on minors.

At the Tuesday night meeting Klein told attendees that the ordinance was a necessary step to protect children from a practice that was harmful, ineffective and further marginalized the LGBTQ community.

Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine joined a handful of doctors to speak on the importance of immunizations and vaccinations in response to yesterday's U.S Senate hearing on the topic. 

Levine and the other doctors who were at Wednesday's press gathering all agreed that it is important for parents to vaccinate their kids.

Members of the House Democratic Policy Committee heard testimony Tuesday afternoon in North Philadelphia on poverty. Representatives from across the state confronted the problem that exists across Pennsylvania and considered ideas to reverse the trends.

This is the third hearing the committee hosted in Philadelphia since the start of the new legislative session in January. These usually don’t address specific legislation rather specific topics affecting citizens across the commonwealth.
