Senate passes temporary fix to unemployment compensation call center funding issue

A divided Senate Wednesday afternoon passed Senate Bill 250, sponsored by Sen. Kim Ward (R-Westmoreland), which would provide $15 million from the unemployment compensation trust fund to the Service and Infrastructure Improvement Fund to would allow up to 392 currently furloughed call center and other unemployment compensation-related workers to return to work.

 

As the bill moved through the chamber by a 39-8 vote, it was touted as a short-term fix that will hopefully set up a longer-term solution.

The Senate Education Committee Wednesday reported out a number of bills, including one bill that would place additional restrictions on the ability of school boards to approve property tax increases and another bill that would limit the ability of public school employees to accrue benefits while on full-time union leave.

Rep. Dom Costa and the House Democratic Policy Committee discuss statewide towing regulations

The House Democratic Policy Committee gathered once again in Pittsburgh, this time to discuss draft legislation that would create uniform towing regulations statewide. 

Stemming from complaints that “rogue” towing companies are taking advantage of accident victims at the scene of a vehicle crash before law enforcement arrive at the scene, Rep. Dom Costa (D-Morningside) hopes to craft legislation that would create guidelines and regulations for how towing companies can operate.
