E-scooters face speed bumps on the way to legalization

Two representatives from across the state are hoping to legalize electric scooters on Pennsylvania roads, which would clear the way for scooter-sharing companies to occupy mobility markets.

 

Representatives Greg Rothman (R-Cumberland) and Stephen Kinsey (D-Philadelphia) have sponsored a bill that would add low-speed electric scooters to the state’s Vehicle Code, permitting them to be used on roads and streets across the commonwealth. The bill was the subject of a public hearing Thursday, where members of the House Transportation Committee heard from stakeholders about the benefits and impacts of legalizing e-scooters.
