Gov. Wolf joined by former Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris to tout new opioid prescribing guidelines

In a continued effort to reduce the overprescribing of prescription pain medications, Governor Tom Wolf visited University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Montefiore Thursday to announce new prescribing guideline recommendations for the safe use of opioids in orthopedics and sports medicine. 

“The goal is to figure out how to balance the needs in subsiding and managing pain, but also the needs we have in preventing substance abuse disorders from turning into a death,” said Gov. Wolf during the press conference featuring state and local leaders, as well as former Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris. “We have come up with prescribing guidelines that try to address that balance.”

AG DePasquale finds Pittsburgh pension funds continue to slide

In a recent audit of Pittsburgh’s municipal pension fund, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale said despite the city contributing $41.3 million more to its plans than required, funding levels have dropped to 57 percent during his latest audit. 
From January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2015, Pittsburgh contributed $115.6 million- well above the required $74.2 million minimum payment- to its three employee pension plans, according to the Auditor General.
