Bill to halt closure of Polk, White Haven centers put on hold

Despite passing the Senate last week, a bill to halt the proposed closing of two state centers has been put on hold to the chagrin of lawmakers from the affected areas.

The bill was set to be considered in the House Health Committee last Wednesday but House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) appeared before the committee in an emotional meeting, requesting the bill be tabled until December.

House aims to boost volunteer fire, EMS companies with 23-bill package

House lawmakers have pushed this week a series of proposals they say are designed to boost the fortunes of the state’s volunteer firefighter and EMS companies amid declining enlistment and financial hardship.

The package of bills came out of the SR 6 commission, which traveled the state to evaluate threats to first responders and firefighters. Their end product totals 23 bills, including loan forgiveness for those who sign up as volunteer firefighters, making it easier for companies to secure loans and helping first responders suffering from trauma to get care.

Fees, climate change sticking points in House Environmental Resources hearing

Fees collected by the state Department of Environmental Protection and the ongoing debate on the effects of climate change are slated to be major issues for the House Environmental Resources committee this session, if a Tuesday hearing with top DEP staff is any indication.

DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell presented his agency’s budget overview before the committee but spent most of his time fielding questions from members related to how his program spends money gained from fees it charges for permit applications, including for companies seeking to drill in the Marcellus Shale formation.
