Natural gas drilling bill up for consideration in House

House lawmakers are considering a bill that aims to cut down on the impact of natural gas drilling by allowing for longer horizontal drilling laterals across multiple units.

Sponsored by Rep. Donna Oberlander (R-Clarion), HB 247 would allow for cross unit drilling, given that drill operators secure valid leases for the land on which they drill. Supporters of the bill say it would create a less disruptive environment, limiting the amount of drills, well pads, access roads and pipelines necessary for the drilling of natural gas.

Legislators aim to protect corrections officers with new bills

State Representatives Pam Snyder (D-Greene) and Carl Metzgar (R-Somerset) hope that a series of bills introduced in January will help better protect state corrections officers from inmate violence — and potentially save lives in the process.

Snyder unveiled three pieces of legislation at the end of January with the goal of protecting corrections officers from violent interactions with inmates. Metzgar also re-introduced a seven-bill package that would place harsher penalties on inmates who assault prison staff.
