Senate passes temporary fix to unemployment compensation call center funding issue

A divided Senate Wednesday afternoon passed Senate Bill 250, sponsored by Sen. Kim Ward (R-Westmoreland), which would provide $15 million from the unemployment compensation trust fund to the Service and Infrastructure Improvement Fund to would allow up to 392 currently furloughed call center and other unemployment compensation-related workers to return to work.

 

As the bill moved through the chamber by a 39-8 vote, it was touted as a short-term fix that will hopefully set up a longer-term solution.

REAL ID Act compliance effort continues to advance in PA Senate

Legislation introduced by Sen. Kim Ward (R-Westmoreland) that would begin the process of Pennsylvania complying with the federal REAL ID Act continued its advance Monday.

 

Passed in 2005, the federal REAL ID Act requires states to adopt specific, nationwide standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards in order to strengthen immigration enforcement and boost homeland security.

Senate committee advances short-term fix to UC call center funding

The Senate Labor and Industry Committee advanced Senate Bill 250 Tuesday afternoon along an 8-4 vote.

 

The legislation, introduced by Committee Majority Chairman Kim Ward (R-Westmoreland), would provide $15 million in funding from employee contributions to the Service and Infrastructure Improvement Fund that would allow up to 392 currently furloughed call center and other unemployment compensation-related workers to return to work.

Wagner, Manderino trade jabs over UC funding dispute at L&I budget hearing

Sen. Scott Wagner (R-York) and Labor and Industry Secretary Kathy Manderino traded jabs during the department’s Senate budget hearing Tuesday morning, as the spat between Senate Republicans and the Wolf administration over the failure to authorize UC call center service and infrastructure funding continues.

 

The failure to authorize the funding resulted in layoffs of nearly 500 employees and the closure of three unemployment compensation call centers around the state, as well as the Harrisburg overflow center.

Pennsylvania begins REAL ID compliance effort

Pennsylvania started the process of complying with the federal REAL ID Act Wednesday with the Senate Communications and Technology Committee advancing legislation to repeal Act 38 of 2012 and asking the US Department of Homeland Security for another extension of time to allow Pennsylvania to develop a compliant identification card.
