In response to a letter from Senate Republican leaders and comments made by Gov. Tom Wolf, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale said he has instructed his staff to conduct a thorough review of the grant agreement that allowed $10 million in taxpayer funds to go to help fund the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia last year, following reports that showed that a surplus in DNC funds went to staff bonuses.

Auditor General releases performance audit of UC system, calls findings “stunning”

Auditor General Eugene DePasquale Tuesday released a long-awaited audit of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry’s unemployment compensation system call centers and funding that was supposed to be used for technology upgrades and system infrastructure improvements.

DePasquale’s office started the audit earlier this year after a number of legislators requested his office look into spending related to the Service and Infrastructure Improvement Fund within the UC system following the refusal of Senate Republicans to vote on legislation extending SIIF funding due to concerns over mismanagement of money and the failure of the Wolf administration to lay out a plan to relieve the state of funding what used to be federal obligations.

Administrative errors, lack of communication caused funding losses for UC system

Administrative errors, lack of communication caused funding losses for UC system

Administrative errors and poor decision-making within the Department of Labor and Industry have caused Pennsylvania’s unemployment compensation system to lose out on past federal funding, a recent internal investigation by the Wolf administration revealed.

Though Auditor General Eugene DePasquale announced last month that his office would be conducting an audit of the UC system under the department and the associated Service Improvement Infrastructure Fund (SIIF) at the heart of a dispute between the Wolf administration and Senate Republicans, the Wolf administration had taken upon itself to conduct a parallel internal review, according to a letter sent by Budget Sec. Randy Albright to the Auditor General on Friday.

According to the letter, that internal review found two critical errors within the department that have caused the UC system to lose out on millions of dollars in federal funding.
