Wolf signs Pennsylvania GI Bill in effort to boost National Guard re-enlistment

Gov. Tom Wolf signed into law Monday an initiative to allow families of National Guard members to earn free college in-state provided a member re-enlists for a second tour of duty, a program that is designed to retain guardsmen at a time when they are being increasingly called into duty.

Flanked by legislators, dozens of guardsmen and their families, Wolf put pen to paper on the bill, which advocates tout as the first of its kind in the nation. Wolf said in remarks that Minnesota has a similar program but it is designed only for spouses, while in Pennsylvania children and other family could earn up to five years of tuition at a State System or State-Related school.

Wolf resists call from Republicans to send National Guard troops to border

Gov. Tom Wolf is pushing back on a call from Republicans to deploy National Guard troops to the US-Mexico border, labeling it a "stunt" in a radio interview and arguing the manpower is needed as the commonwealth enters its typically stormy summer months.

In a letter last week, five Pennsylvania Republican Congressmen sent a letter to Wolf urging him to support President Donald Trump’s plea for more manpower to help monitor the southern border.

Legislators unveil legislation offering incentives to National Guard members

Chairs of the House and Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committees unveiled the "Pennsylvania GI Bill for Families" on Tuesday morning. 

Senators Mike Regan (R-Cumberland) and Lindsey Williams (D-Allegheny) along with Representatives Steve Barrar (R-Delaware) and Chris Sainato (D-Lawrence) introduced Senate Bill 589 and House Bill 1324. The bills would provide higher education benefits to the child or spouse of a Pennsylvania National Guard member who commits to serve an additional six years.
