Budget bill with no tax increases, increased school spending put on fast track

The House Appropriations Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to advance a $32.7 billion 2018-19 budget in what lawmakers hope will start a swift march to finish it ahead of the state’s traditional June 30 deadline.

House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana) said he expected a final floor vote on the bill Wednesday before sending it to the Senate.

Federal judge rules $200 million in last year's budget unconstitutionally allocated

A federal judge overturned part of Pennsylvania’s 2017 budget compromise Thursday.

The decision, by federal Judge Christopher Conner, found that a transfer of $200 million into the General Fund from a state-funded organization meant to finance the purchase of malpractice insurance violated the constitutional right to due process.
