Wolf calls for investments in rural broadband internet

Surrounded by local government officials, educators and business owners, Gov. Tom Wolf on Thursday called on legislators to rally behind funding to expand broadband access in rural areas as part of his Restore Pennsylvania initiative.

 

The plan — which proposes funding $4.5 billion worth of capital projects through a severance tax on natural gas — would create the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Program, which would provide financial assistance to businesses, nonprofits, local governments and rural electric cooperatives to develop the infrastructure necessary to provide high-speed internet in low-access areas.

Study: Pennsylvania broadband access much lower than advertised

After conducting more than 11 million internet speed tests across Pennsylvania, a prominent telecommunications researcher says that access to broadband internet in Pennsylvania is worse than publicly advertised.

 

Sascha Meinrath, a telecommunications researcher at Pennsylvania State University, joined state lawmakers Tuesday to detail findings of a rural broadband internet study which found that data provided by the Federal Communications Commission paints an overly-optimistic picture of broadband access in Pennsylvania.

Phillips-Hill appointed to FCC committee

As part of a committee expansion, Rep. Kristin Philips-Hill (R-York) has been appointed a panel of the Federal Communications Commission.

She will now serve on the FCC’s Intergovernmental Advisory Committee until March 29, 2019. The committee, expanding from 15 to 30 members, provides advice on state and local telecommunications issues to the federal government.
