Pittsburgh City Council swears in new City Clerk

Pittsburgh City Council swore in Brenda Pree as the newest City Clerk on Tuesday, much to the dismay of two Councilwomen.  


Councilwomen Theresa Kail-Smith (District 2) and Darlene Harris (District 1) were the sole negative votes on the nomination of Ms. Pree, a Mississippi native, citing their disapproval of proper consideration of Pittsburgh locals, especially long-time Deputy Clerk, Kim Clark, an African-American woman.

Pittsburgh City Council holds preliminary discussions on tax exemptions for developers

Pittsburgh City Council held a post agenda meeting Tuesday on preliminary discussions on programs aimed at stimulating commercial and residential development in several targeted city neighborhoods.

Much of the dialogue at the meeting, headed by Councilman Dan Gilman (District 8), centered around the necessity to construct comprehensive tax exemption programs for real estate developers that fit into the current – and future – conditions of Pittsburgh’s economy and demographics.

Pittsburgh City Council confirms first director of the city's new Department of Mobility and Infrastructure

Pittsburgh City Council Monday confirmed Karina Ricks Monday, the city’s first director of the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure.

A former associate director in Washington D.C’s transportation department, Ricks begin at the new Pittsburgh department in February as interim director making a salary of $103,936 a year. The department’s annual budget is $439,643.

Pittsburgh City Council approves new Police Chief

Pittsburgh City Council unanimously approved Scott Schubert’s appointment as chief of the city’s Bureau of Police on Tuesday. 

“I think this is a great appointment by the Mayor,” said Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith (District 2). “We’ve seen [Schubert] first hand serve the community as commander of our zone, attend countless community meetings…it's just tremendous.”

Pittsburgh City Council approves $250K for bicentennial debt

Pittsburgh City Council approved a measure Tuesday morning that would cover $250,000 in remaining costs from the city’s year-long bicentennial celebrations. 

About $1.5 million was covered by private investors such as nonprofits and foundations for events like parades, festivals, parties, marathons and walks around the city, but that wasn’t quite enough.
