Proposal seeks to bring sunshine to judicial appointment of locally-elected officials

A proposal being circulated by Rep. Kerry Benninghoff (R-Centre) seeks to add new Right to Know Law requirements to judicial agencies when performing the function of appointing people to vacancies in locally-elected offices.

Currently, judicial agencies of the Commonwealth must provide financial date under the Right to Know Law upon request, but the law requires no other disclosures from the courts.

House Republicans form task force to find government redundancies, promote efficiency

A special task force of the House Republican Policy Committee was announced Monday morning, appointed to find redundancies in government and promote efficiencies to find savings that could potentially mitigate the need for revenue increases.

The endeavor by the 17-member group of Republicans is called PennSAVE, the acronym standing for savings, accountability, value, and efficiency.

Auditor General, legislators cast light on troubling PDE conduct

During Thursday’s meeting with the House Republican Policy Committee, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale told committee members he’s uncovered a number of troubling actions on the part of the Pennsylvania Department of Education while conducting his department’s yet-to-be-released audit.

“[There] is a culture in that agency that is not healthy for fostering good education outcomes,” he told the committee.

He said that his department’s audit will focus on, among other things, what PDE does to help school districts that are struggling academically, specifically on reporting.

“School districts are incredibly frustrated,” he added.
