Leaders put big picture reforms on radar for last days of session

Legislative leaders have, after months of stalled efforts and with fifty days to the election, started pushing big changes to state government.

Speaking to the Philadelphia Daily News’ John Baer, Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) said that during the run-up to sine die, he wants to prioritize congressional redistricting reform and shrinking the size of the state legislature before the November general election, perhaps even adding session days.

This follows up on Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson) officially releasing his bill to open primaries last week.

Legislators call on leaders to bring up bill to reduce the number of house seats

On Monday morning Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler) and a handful of other lawmakers called on legislative leaders to bring up House Bill 153 for a floor vote. 

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Jerry Knowles (R-Schuylkill) and would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to reduce the number of seats in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 203 to 151.

Amendment to cut number of representatives advances to Senate floor

A bill to slash the size of the state House of Representatives moved forward in the Senate Wednesday.

Rep. Jerry Knowles' (R-Schuylkill) HB 153, a constitutional amendment which would cut the House from 203 members to 151, passed the Senate State Government Committee with only one dissenting vote.
