City, advocates push buck back and forth over accessibility enforcement

After hearing impassioned testimony from disability advocates, Pittsburgh City Council met Wednesday to figure out how well the city enforces federal disability law.

The meeting, called for by Councilwoman Deb Gross (District 7) was in response to an April council meeting where three bills to alter permits and licensing procedures were held up by public comment.

Pittsburgh City Council delayed three bills on city building codes Wednesday after hearing from nearly two-dozen disability advocates — some themselves disabled — concerned about the Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections’ adherence to the federal Americans With Disabilities Act.
