Following the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Harvey to the gulf coast of Texas, Pennsylvania joined in recovery efforts this week, dispatching a task force of emergency responders to the region. It is unknown how long the 45 members of Task Force 1 will remain in Texas but Gov. Wolf has offered the commonwealth's continuing aid in what he called a "long-term response and recovery effort."

  Treasurer Joe Torsella this week announced he is joining state treasurers in West Virginia and Illinois to "demand that Big Pharma takes the necessary steps to combat the [opioid] epidemic at its source," calling on prescription drug wholesalers to "put public safety before private profits."

  Libre's Law, containing a host of reforms to the state's animal cruelty statutes, went into effect this week. According to advocates the new laws would limit the amount of time a dog may be tethered outside, increase penalties for neglect and cruelty, and add expand protections to horses.
